Flannel Love

Blank NYC jeans (similar in black – I have these and love them);  Vermont Flannel Henley (definitely recommend ordering down a size);  Madewell fur scarf (similar);  Steve Madden bootiesJoelle Hawkens bagRay-Ban sunglasses;  Bracelets: Lilli & Tori, C. Wonder, Gorjana

Despite our warmer temperatures lately, I just can’t seem to step away from my plaid and flannel addiction, and this one, in particular, has been in heavy rotation.  It’s oversized and oh-so-cozy, and I just can’t get enough.  We snapped these photos a couple of Saturdays ago when I dragged Eric with me on a Target run, something I usually immediately regret.  And this time was, well, as “delightful” as ever.  I just don’t understand – how could anyone not like playing photographer and going to Target on a Saturday afternoon? 😉

This past holiday season, I was fortunate to work with Sears to style a couple of holiday looks and gather up a few of my favorite gifts for the guys and gals in your life, but for my final post, it’s all about my own wardrobe and how I see it transitioning into 2015.  This year my style resolution is to stop overthinking things and just wear what feels right.  (Life always turns out better that way, right?)  I’m not saying that I want to live in sweats or look like a slob kabob (well, not most of the time), but I want to break the rules a little, mix more prints and high-low pieces, and maybe borrow a bit from the boys.  Who says you can’t dress up a flannel men’s button-down with skinnies and heels?  Yep, this one’s from the men’s department, and I may have to order it in more colors.  It’s SO soft and adds a little bit of slouch to an otherwise sleek look.  And while we’re on the subject of borrowing, these faux leather pants were found in the juniors department (something I am definitely not), and they’re a great substitution for your basic denim skinnies.  Top it all off with a classic pair of leopard heels for a little contrast and fun.  What are some of your style resolutions for 2015?

Wow.  Can you guys believe that Thanksgiving has passed and we’re already in December?  The holidays this year need to slow down, or I need to start my shopping, one of the two.  With my family and Eric’s combined, we have quite a few gifts to shop for, and this year I’m determined not to wait until the last minute.  (Famous last words…)  So the hunt has begun, and today I’m teaming up with Sears Style to bring you gifts galore for guys and gals for under 40 bucks.  We’ll start off with the ladies, and I’m pretty sure you can never go wrong with a cozy robe and slippers set.  (Pair it with gourmet cocoa and Netflix, and you have a nice little relaxation gift.)  Statement jewelry, an on-trend scarf, or cozy gloves are all can’t-miss options as well, and for your fashion-forward friend or family member, these over-the-knee boots are a totally chic steal.

And as for the guys, I’ve always found it best to keep it simple for the men in my life.  Eric pretty much lives in plaid, and this Sherpa-lined option is perfect for the middle of winter.  For the classic guy, you can’t go wrong with a basic sweater or t-shirt, and I love this simple puffy vest.  For smaller gifts, a knit beanie or tie are great options, or go for a new wallet with a couple of gift cards already inside.  Whatever you choose, just remember that “it’s more than a gift – it’s the joy of the season.”

When it comes to outerwear, the poncho is the unofficial champion of girls like me who are perpetually living in warm weather.  It’s one of my go-to ways to look fall-ish without sweating to death.  (Layering it over a plaid button-down and slapping on leather shorts and over-the-knee boots are however not encouraged when trying to keep cool.  Just FYI.)  These photos are finally making it up on the blog from last month’s trip to Louisiana, and this day was a particular scorcher in New Orleans.  But you know, when you pack your bags with “cool front” in mind, there’s just no stopping the layers that will happen.  Hope everyone is having a great week!

Last week I met up with Kathleen for happy hour at one of my favorite spots in Newport Beach, The Cannery.  After much gabbing and a couple of cocktails, we snapped these photos right outside of the restaurant.  I had plans of wearing a cute little dress and heeled sandals all day, but I lost track of time and threw on these glorified sweats on my way out the door.  I love Riller & Fount’s ultra-soft knitwear, and this little t-shirt dress is no exception.  Since I walked the few blocks there, a plaid around the waist, wedge sneakers, and sassy shades helped finish off the look.  Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Since moving down to Newport a couple of years ago, the week of the 4th of July has definitely become one of my favorite weeks of the year.  There’s a definite excitement in the air around here, and red, white, and blue touches can be seen pretty much everywhere.  Bikes are being prepared, BBQ’s are readied, and there’s a genuine happiness in people despite the lingering June Gloom weather.  We live in an area with a lot of weekly beach house rentals, so right about now is when all the families are arriving, ready for their 4th at the beach.  Although I haven’t quite picked out my look for the 4th yet, above are a few pieces I definitely would like to get my hands on.

These simple swimsuits by Becca are my hands-down favorite and have been for a couple of years because the triangle tops are cut just a bit bigger.  (If you’re like me and have somewhat hard-to-fit curves, I’d definitely recommend giving these a shot.)  These seersucker shorts are about the cutest things I’ve seen, and topped with an easy tank and a plaid tied around the waist, they’re an easy Americana staple.  Finish things off with fun accessories, gladiator sandals, and a chic beach bag that’ll hold everything.  Here’s wishing everyone an amazing “Fourth Week”!

Today I’m rejoining the real world after a few beautiful days traveling California’s coast with my family.  We spent two nights in Big Sur which is one of my favorite places in the world because you can disconnect and just enjoy the beauty around you.  We snapped these pictures on the way out to Pfeiffer Beach (which turned out to be WAY too cold and windy for us).  I pretty much lived in these Free People shorts and DV booties the entire trip, and I picked up this hat in our hotel gift shop.  A lightweight sweater (last seen here as a dress) was the perfect windy-day topper.  Overall it was an amazing trip, and I’ll be sharing a few more snaps tomorrow.  Stay tuned!

Yesterday was another whirlwind here in New York, but once again, it was exciting and crazy fun.  I started off my day with the Tommy Hilfiger show and actually got to go backstage and see how the models were being prepped with hair and makeup.  The show itself did not disappoint, and I find myself suddenly drawn to plaid.  Lots and lots of ski resort worthy plaid.  I then had brunch and gab time with one of my best friends from high school before heading off to the Katya Leonovich show.  Cold and pretty pooped, I called it an early night and headed back to my hotel for room service and TV in bed, something you can only do in a hotel room.

My look for the day consisted of a favorite Ripley Rader jumpsuit (made warmer with fleece-lined tights underneath) and a new studded jacket from H&M that I love.  Gold jewelry (including two new rings from Big Drop NYC) and my go-to fur coat were the finishing touches.  Feeling rested and ready for the day ahead, it’s off to more Fashion Week craziness for me.  Hope everyone is having a great week!

1 Sweatshirt, 3 Ways (Day 3)

So today I’m taking this Everlane sweatshirt for one more spin because third time’s a charm, right?  After pairing it with dressed-up sweatpants last week and a leather skirt and boots earlier this week, I figured I’d take it easy today with a slouchy plaid and coated leggings.  (The leggings are a new discovery from Evleo, and if you’re into leggings, they’re a name you should know.)  Heels and stacked gold jewelry help pull the look together a bit.  I’m still rounding up warm necessities for this weekend’s trip to New York, and the forecast is just frightening to me.  Any and all packing/dressing suggestions for the frigid cold are welcome!

Oxblood

Well it was a warm and beautiful Christmas at the beach, and I couldn’t have asked for a better time with family and friends.  In the mornings and evenings it’s still cold enough for a few winter layers, so I decided to throw on three Christmas gifts at once (the shirt, sweater, and cape) yesterday for dinner and a little shopping.  I love the plaid paired with the fuzzy (and ultra-cozy) sweater, and I figured I’d go monochromatic by topping the oxblood skinnies with the similarly-hued cape.  Hope you had a great holiday week, and happy Friday, everyone!
