While California is still pretty shut down right now, I’ve finally made it past the “everyday sweatpants” phase I was in because, well, the weather got warm.  Full disclosure, you can still find me in workout gear or these Gap sets that I swear by (sweatshirt here and shorts here – both on sale) a TON, but these days I’m mixing in some easy basics and fun accessories to at least pretend like I tried, ya know?

Here are a few casual staples that have been in heavy rotation lately:

The under $10 Walmart t-shirt dress (I bought a medium and had it hemmed an inch or two)

The denim shorts I own in 3 washes

These $20 henley tees that wash and wear SO well

This jumpsuit that feels like PJ’s (bonus – you can try before you buy with Amazon Wardrobe)

These bike shorts and these cross-back tanks (LOVE) for outdoor workouts

What are some pieces you guys are living in these days?

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you’ve probably seen that the husband and I are on a little long-awaited vacay.  We kicked things off with a weeklong trip to Idaho with his family and then hopped into a rental car for another week of road-tripping together.  I’ll be sharing a full recap of the trip – where we stayed, where we ate, what we did – once we’re back, but today I’m checking in with a few more looks to love from Walmart.

If you saw this post and then this one, you know that I’ve been finding ALL the summer things for the best prices from Walmart.  And today’s post is no exception.  Y’all, these jean shorts are seriously the $10 gift that just keeps on giving, and when I saw this little striped sweater in store during my trip home to Louisiana, I knew I needed it for the chilly nights ahead on our road trip.  (I sized up two sizes for a looser fit.)

The black jumpsuit (available in four colors) is perfect for the hot weather that’s just setting in at home in SoCal, and that knotted maxi dress is a summertime dream.  I searched and searched but sadly couldn’t get my hands on it in black before it sold out.  If your local store still has the black version, grab it…and every other color.

I’ll be checking out for a few more days, but if you’re interested in following along on our Idaho / Montana / Wyoming rambles, be sure to follow along on Instagram.  Hope everyone has a great rest of the week ahead!

A Few Favorite Summer Denim Pieces

Madewell chambray dress | My Style Diaries blogger Nikki Prendergast Madewell denim dress (also here);  Knot heels (40% off);  Bamboo clutchJulie Vos banglesRay-Ban sunglasses

In the daily routine during summers past, you could usually find me in some sort of jersey t-shirt dress or flowy floral number.  I was never really a “jorts” girl until a couple of summers ago and certainly didn’t own much summer denim.  And now I’m wondering, what in the world was I thinking?  Jean shorts are pretty much my main jam these days (these are my current faves, I sized up for reference), and I live for a good summer denim piece.

And I’m pretty sure it all started with this dress.  Pretty much the same dress as above but in a different denim.  Remember this one from last year?  GoodNESS, I wore that poor dress to death, and to be honest, I still do.  It’s just seriously comfortable, looks a bit more pulled together than that old t-shirt dress, and goes with just about every sneaker, slide, and sandal I own.  Plus, the fit and lightweight fabric are airy enough for even the hottest days.  So when I saw the same dress in a new chambray style this season, I obviously had to snag it.

Other denim favorites?  Still obsessed with this jumpsuit (that’s sadly sold out) and this figure-flattering romper that’s just been restocked in all sizes.  It’s under $100, super easy to pull off with wedges, slides, or sandals, and seriously slimming.  (Hashtag, yassss.)  I really can’t recommend it more, but if you’re looking for a little something else, check out a few more of my favorite summer denim finds below.  What are some of the unexpected pieces you guys are most excited about for summer?

A little over a week ago, Kathleen and I headed to Mexico for Jenn’s wedding in Cabo and stayed at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica resort.  We had been planning the trip for what seemed like forever, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.  Last week I shared a little peek of the hotel, but today I’m so excited to share a few reasons to L-O-V-E this place.

The People.  This to me is far and beyond, without question, my numero uno favorite thing about staying at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica.  The people here were JUST so nice, and the level of service was pretty amazing.  We were lucky enough to stay in the new Towers at Pacifica which boast a 24-hour butler service.  Shoutout to our main man Manuel who seriously hooked it up – everything from scheduling dinner reservations, booking beach cabanas, arranging transportation, mixing up the prettiest cocktails (gotta do it for the ‘gram), and even showing up with duct tape when we had a little luggage snafu.  From the moment we arrived to the time we checked out, we were pretty blown away by the friendly faces and beyond helpful staff.

The Beach Cabanas.  This was by far our favorite daytime activity.  The pool looked really nice and had a swim-up bar, but when the ocean is just a few steps further, it has to win, right?  There is a flat option and swinging bed option, and no worries about walking over to the bar for your next drink.  Rene and Juan will be by periodically to make sure you never need to get up.  You have to book the cabanas ahead of time as they do tend to fill up, but for around $40 a day, it’s totally worth it.

The Location.  The location of the resort is really pretty great.  It’s located on the beach (hello, panoramic ocean view) but just minutes from the main part of town.  It was also a perfect fit for us as it ended up being about 15 minutes from the wedding venue.

The Food.  Pueblo Bonito Pacifica is an all-inclusive resort which means you can leave your wallet in the room and just bring yourself to breakfast. (And lunch and dinner actually.)  I’ve been to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico before, and the food was just pretty, meh.  This time around the food was definitely better (especially the breakfast – loved it).  I’d definitely recommend the nachos by the beach or pool, room service shrimp fajitas, and the Sunday brunch for sure.  Oh, and that whole all-inclusive thing, it also includes the booze.  Get yourself a piña colada and live your best life, girl.

The Spa.  Kathleen and I both enjoyed massages at the Armonia Spa on our first full day at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, and let me tell you, there’s just no better way to kick off a trip.  Breakfast, massage, and then an afternoon in a beach cabana?  Sign me up, sister.

The Views.  Is there anything better than waking up and looking out at the ocean?  In my book, probably not, but Pueblo Bonito Pacifica takes it a little further because everything around the hotel is just plain pretty.  From giant cacti to tons of bougainvillea, water features to daily hand-designed sand art, and even the buildings themselves, there’s just no shortage of pretty scenery.

Overall we had an amazing four nights in Mexico, and next time, I’m definitely dragging Eric back to Pueblo Bonito Pacifica with me.  If you’re looking for a laidback vacation filled with the friendliest people to help make your stay easy-peasy, then this is your spot.

Happy Friday, friends!  We made it to the weekend, finally.  Last night Eric and I drove to Palm Springs for the second weekend of Modernism Week, and we’re so excited to take in a little home inspiration on the Moroccan Modern tour tomorrow.  We experienced our first taste of Modernism Week back in the fall and loved getting to tour some of the fabulous homes around us.  Admittedly we wanted to do more tours this time around, but we had family in town last week – so there’s always next season.

Tours or no tours, Palm Springs is always my happy place, and I’m so excited for the weekend and week ahead.  On Sunday, I’m trading out the husband and a couple of our friends for some of my best gals and a fun little girls’ week.  We planned for lots of sun, warm weather, and possibly pool time, but y’all – it’s cold here!  It’s definitely colder this weekend than it was for New Year’s Eve in the desert, but hey, I’m not complaining.  Just don’t be alarmed if you see me out and about in some type of pool kaftan topped with a winter coat – I have NO idea why my closet and suitcase here are filled with randomness.

One thing that did make the trip?  This denim jacket that I’ve worn a TON recently (last seen here).  It’s such an easy, versatile piece, and I love it over a comfy striped dress.  Also making the trip?  These leopard sneakers that get so much attention everywhere they go.  They look exactly like a leopard pair from this brand, but for a fraction of the price.  (Because I’m not about to spend anywhere near $400-500 on a pair of sneakers.  Just no.)

But a big, fat YES to the weekend ahead, and wishing everyone a good one!

Good morning, friends!  If you’ve been following along here for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I never miss out on snagging a few favorites every season from cabi, and when I find something of theirs that I love, I tend to wear it to death.  I’m super excited to share a couple of pieces from their brand new collection, Penny Lane Lovely, that’s finally available today.

No surprise here, the new pieces are SO good, and this playsuit just may be my new fall uniform.  I’ve styled it here super casual for a day of running errands or grabbing brunch with friends, and guys, these loafers are seriously so comfortable.  Add a pair of heels and some fab accessories, and you’ve got a completely different look a la Sam from Style of Sam and Jo from Le Fab Chic, below.  (Head over to their blogs to see more on how they styled the playsuit.)

If you’re a cabi girl like me, don’t miss out on this brand new batch of goodies because we all know, once a piece is gone, it’s really gone, girl.  Hope everyone is having a great week!

The Wedding Registry Items I’m Still Loving After One Year

Whoa, whoa y’all – this post has seriously been in the works FOR-EV-ER!  And well, today is the day, sister.  When Eric and I first got engaged in 2014, the whole process of wedding planning seemed fun but admittedly a little daunting.  One task that didn’t scare me at all though – handling the wedding registry.  I mean, shopping is my thing.  Send me to a store armed with some sort of scan gun situation and I’m ready, Freddie.

What I hadn’t planned on was every Tom, Dick, and Harry who wants to tell you exactly what you should be registering for.  “Definitely register for fine China, even if you don’t think you’ll use it.”  Huh?  No.  By the time we got married, Eric and I had lived together for close to four years, so I had a pretty good grasp on what we’d use, what we wouldn’t, and what we couldn’t wait to get our hands on.  Eric didn’t seem too jazzed by the registering process, so I went alone.  I grabbed some breakfast and then headed to the mall for my scan gun.  It was a good day.

Over the last year plus a couple of months (that totally flew by), I’ve gotten a hold on the things we’ve really used and loved around here, so today I’m sharing a few.  Now, I’m not trying to be the aforementioned Tom, Dick, or Harry, but here’s my two cents if you’re in that registering phase and looking for a bit of direction.  (Or, if you’re just looking for some new goodies for your own kitchen.)

Scroll down for my picks, but in the end, just consider your own life with your partner.  Do you need the super expensive silverware that’s going to tarnish in the dishwasher and make you spend your Saturdays polishing it?  I don’t know your life, maybe you do need it.  Do you really need three sets of various nesting bowls?  Well maybe, because I freaking love them.

registry-favorites-11.  Keurig Brewing System – There’s no time like the wedding registry to finally get that fancy coffee maker you’ve been wanting, and if you’re like me, it’ll be something you use everyday.  And maybe, multiple times a day.  Personally, I love the Keurig machine, but Eric is more of a normal cup-o-joe kind of guy so we also have this coffee maker.

2.  Cake Plate with Dome – Admittedly, I did not put one of these on my registry, but I’ve recently acquired this one and love it.  No, I’m not in the kitchen baking cakes all day, but this house does frequently have doughnuts or muffins or some other sort of pastry situation going on, so why not put them on display?

3.  Cheese board – I registered for, like, four cheese boards which is probably a lot, but we really like cheese.  We do pretty much use all of them, but in particular I love this slate board because you can put it in the fridge beforehand to keep cheeses or other apps cold for a bit longer.  Also, this one – we use it a ton.  And although they can be beautiful, I don’t really recommend the wood and marble combo versions because in my experience, they just don’t look nice for very long.

4. Kate Spade Vase – Aww, that sweet friend of yours shows up with unexpected flowers, and you coolly drop them into…whatever water pitcher or wine bottle you can find.  Hashtag, adulting.  I never had nice vases before our registry, and now it’s nice to know that I’ve always got a couple on hand for when I surprise myself with peonies.  (Aw, I shouldn’t have.)

5. 3-Piece Mixing Bowl Set – See #8 for my obsession with nesting bowls, but I love that this little set is adorable and comes with lids – perfect for mixing, storing, and even bringing a little something yummy over to a friend’s house.

6. Pepper Mill – I didn’t actually register for a pepper mill, but one of Eric’s aunts gave us a really great one engraved with our names and wedding date.  I thought it was a really neat gift, but I had no idea how much we would use it.  ALL. THE. TIME.  There’s just something about using real cracked pepper, and I use it every single time I cook.  A wooden version is always nice, but I’m also loving this little seafoam one.

7. Stemless Wine Glasses – I received some beautiful, stemmed wine glasses from our registry and promptly shattered one in my hands the first time I hand washed them.  We still love and use them (carefully), but I find myself mostly grabbing for our simple, stemless glasses – and then tossing them in the dishwasher.

8. Nesting Bowls – Before my wedding registry, I never knew what a stacking bowl fanatic I was, but then, there I was, just oogling every nesting bowl situation I came across.  While I think a classic glass set is great, they’re heavy as hell when stacked, so I definitely use this lightweight version the most.  Plus, I love the turquoise color.

9.  Chicago Cutlery Knife Block Set – I love to cook, and for years before our wedding I was literally sawing through vegetables with the dullest knives on the planet.  Not ideal for your fingers.  Eric recommended getting new ones, but I lovingly reminded him that we would someday put them on our wedding registry.  Someday.  Having a nice knife set has seriously made me love cooking even more, and I love that this knife block has the sharpener built in.  There are a ton of knife block sets out there though, so this one may require a little bit of research to figure out what you really want.

10. Serving Trays – Because around here, parties happen.  And frequently.  So it’s nice to finally have a bunch of different platter and serving tray options for serving up whatever.

11.  Calphalon Non-Stick Multi-Pot with Lid (also here) – You just don’t even know how happy this pot makes me.  Is that weird?  Ha!  It has a built-in colander for easily draining pasta, veggies, you name it and also comes with a basket for steaming vegetables.  I went for all Calphalon pots and pans and am really happy with them.

12.  Wooden salad bowl – We make a lot of salads around here, and if I served them up in any old dish, what kind of a monster would I be?  I kid, but I do LOVE these wooden salad bowls.  I have a larger version for servin’ up friends and family and this smaller one for when it’s just Eric and me.

13.  Crock-Pot (or any slow-cooker, really) – Anyone who follows along on my Instagram stories knows that I’m ALL about my Crock-Pot.  I’ll be honest, I didn’t actually have to register for one for our wedding because we already had…three of them.  When you’re a fan, you’re a fan.  This particular one is my favorite because I love that the lid latches on – things seem to cook faster when you need them to.

14. Nesting storage containers with lids – Maybe I’m a weirdo, but the day that I could finally kick all those mis-matched, hodge-podge storage containers that were causing an avalanche in my cabinet to the curb in favor of this sleek, stacking set was a good day.   And in fact I’m thinking I may need to spring for a second set.  These are always in use in our house.

15. Oil & Vinegar bottles – I registered for oil & vinegar pour bottles because I thought they’d look so nice on our counter.  Now, they’re so much more than just counter decor, and we use them all the time, either when cooking, making salads, or having cheese and crackers.  Bonus, the friend who gave them to us included a nice bottle of balsamic vinegar and blood orange olive oil.  So yum.

16. Vitamix – I picked out every single thing on our registry while Eric was at a football game, but the Vitamix was Eric’s one request.  They’re pretty pricey, but this machine can make ALL of the things.  We use it a ton for smoothies, and I’ve even made a couple of soups.  (The blades spin so fast that if you leave ingredients in for a few minutes, you’ll actually get a piping hot soup.)  Also, you can make homemade almond butters and things like that if your inner Martha is just aching to emerge.

Can’t Get Enough: Summer Stripes

Best striped pieces for summer 2017 1. Double Up Tankini Top (Up to D Cup)  2. Lace-Up Espadrille  3. Amour Vert Stretch Jersey Top  4. Beaded Tassel Tote  5. Off-Duty T-Shirt Dress  6. Colorblocked Hinge Bangle  7. Striped Bow Heeled Mule  8. Striped Cold Shoulder Jumpsuit  9. Striped Bow Slide Sandals (Under $25!)  10. Large Expandable Pouch  11. Striped Platform Sandal (on sale!)  12. Pom Fringe Striped Scarf  13. Leather Striped Clutch  14. Umbrella Stripe Sarong

While taking a stroll over the old Instagram this morning, I noticed that lately I’ve got quite a thing for stripes.  And truth be told, it’s not just a recent obsession.  I feel like of all the prints and patterns that I dig – florals, plaid, gingham, and even palm printsstripes are definitely my main squeeze.  They’re so classic and easy to mix, match and mingle, and this season, they’re once again everywhere.

So whether you go for a swimsuit (the tankini at number one is so good for busty gals), a fun bag, or a little something for your feet, you really can’t go wrong with adding a little stripe to any look.  My personal faves?  Well, I did pick all of the above, but I really want to get my hands on numbers five and fourteen – nothing better than a pool sarong that doubles as a scarf later.  And the slides at number nine are pretty dang cute for under $25.  Also, if you’re looking for the absolute softest tees around, the brand at number three has that ALL figured out.  Hope everyone is having a great week, and happy summer shopping!

My Shopbop Sale Picks

shopbop-sale-1 1. Black Jersey Jumpsuit  2. Wicker and Leather Handbag  3. Soft Fatigue Shorts  4. Gold and Pink Mirrored Aviators  5. Blue Floral Coverup Dress  6. Amber Bracelet Set  7. By now you know I love a good sale, and there are few that I love more than a Shopbop sale.  Some of my favorite pieces in my closet are things that I ordered from Shopbop, whether it’s a favorite handbag or an embroidered dress that gets compliments every time I wear it.  This post was actually supposed to go up hours ago, but I just kept getting so distracted shopping the sale for myself.  I know, bad blogger.

So today I’m rounding up a few favorites from the sale including a couple that are currently in my cart.  (I’m terrible at making decisions during these sales.  Add to cart, remove from cart, add to cart, repeat.)  If you’ve had your eye on something for summer, now’s the time to snap it up.  Otherwise, you can find Tory Burch on sale, an amazing selection of sale swimwear, and some of the cutest little summer dresses under $100.  (LOVE this little lace-up number.)  Take 20% off of orders under $500 and 25% off any orders over $500 with code EVENT17.  Also make sure you check for any favorites in the sale section (like this bag I’ve had my eye on forever) because the sale applies to all of those goodies too.  Sales on sales, my favorite way to shop.  Hope everyone is having a great week!
